Ending my tenure as Independent Anti-Slavery Commissioner

The UK's first Independent Anti-Slavery Commissioner announced on Thursday that he will be stepping down from his position. Kevin Hyland worked for the Metropolitan Police before taking on the role of Commissioner and has been a key driver in the fight against modern slavery in the UK. You can read a (long) list of his accomplishments here, and read comments from the Archbishop of Canterbury and the Bishop of Derby here

Much work remains, but I depart knowing that awareness both at the highest level and at that critical working level has never been greater. I am equally sure that the United Kingdom has moved into a role of thought leader and seminal actor on modern slavery.
— Kvein Hyland, IASC

Unboxing the truth

You may or may not have heard of the phenomenon of 'unboxing', where video bloggers film themselves opening, or 'unboxing' a new product. Jacques Slade is a professional unboxer, running a YouTube channel with over 800,000 subscribers. He produces daily videos of himself opening and reviewing the latest premium brand trainers. In this video he is sent some trainers with a difference from Thomson Reuters.

Raising modern slavery awareness in Wolverhampton

Our partners in the Diocese of Lichfield held a successful awareness raising event in Wolverhampton this week. They decamped to St Peter's Church in the city centre with a van promoting enticing job adverts that may turn out to be too good to be true... Take a look here.

The moment police raided a suspected Eastern European slavery gang in Folkestone, Dover and Lydd

News of raids in Kent this week where the police made four arrests ans safeguarded 12 victims, all from the Czech Republic. Kent Police have been working with their counterparts in the Czech Republic since March this year to arrange the operation which included raids of a factory and a hand car wash. If you're based in the Kent area and want to find out more about modern slavery then come along to our event on Saturday 16th June and see how you can help support victims and survivors.

Tackling human trafficking and modern slavery is a priority for Kent Police and we will be relentless in our pursuit of those whom we believe are responsible for the exploitation of others. Such offences have no place in a civilised society and we are keen to do everything we can to prevent them from happening and protect those who are most at risk.
